Frequently Asked Questions about paragliding Can't find the answer? Write to us!
Frequently asked questions about paragliding to which we answer and which usually clarify any doubts or curiosities to our friends. If you need help, write us or watch the videos on our YouTube Channel
Of course! In the harness of all pilots who fly in tandem there is a canopy rescue parachute. Our philosophy is this: the parachute must always be present but it must never be used! We at FassaFly guarantee you the highest standard in terms of safety.
To book your flight just call us or send us an e-mail (see the CONTACTS section of this same site). Normally a date is set and updated a couple of days before it to check if the conditions for a safe flight exist. .
The meeting point is normally set in front of the cashier of the Col Rodella cable car in Campitello di Fassa, but in particular cases or outside the opening periods of the lifts the appointment for the meeting can be moved to another place, which will be well indicated by the pilot. The passenger must only show up for the appointment; we will take care of all possible displacements.
There are always 2 pilots available plus others in case of need (for example for groups) so you can fly simultaneously with whoever you want.
Fassa Fly has specific equipment for flying with people with physical disabilities. Contact us and we will be happy to find the solution together with you to make a flight in total safety.
Yes, all the equipment for tandem flying is specifically designed to support the greater weight, the wing is larger and the harnesses are made to give the greatest possible comfort.
The weight varies from 25 to 30 kg.
A tandem paraglider costs around € 4,000 plus there are the two harnesses which cost around € 1,400 and the reserve parachute which is worth around € 1,000.
It depends on the season, remember that in Val di Fassa winter can be very cold and summer very cool so we recommend: winter at least as if you were going skiing, while in summer a windproof jacket is super suitable. Then if possible some boots or at least shoes with a good grip.
To take off, just take a short run of a few meters following the instructions of the instructor pilot, I decided, without stopping. For landing, simply raise your legs so it will land on your butt. Don't worry, the harness is equipped with an air bag for a super soft landing. In flight, the passenger only has to enjoy the fantastic panorama that the magnificent Val di Fassa can offer, surrounded by the fantastic Dolomites.
We basically offer two types of tandem paragliding flight:
- gliding flight, lasts approximately 15/20 min and takes place in calm air conditions, it is the most suitable flight for first-time users.
- thermal flight, it is carried out in the central hours of the day when it is possible to take advantage of the thermals that is the updrafts that allow you to get up at a height enjoying an even wider view, moving further away. This flight, being more choppy, is more suitable for those who have already tried at least one gliding flight.
We at Fassafly do not carry out courses, Jimmy, multiple world champion and national instructor over time has preferred to pass on his great experience by carrying out advanced courses, where he can best convey the secrets of the expert pilot.
The paragliding school is the key to access this world, once your feet are off the ground, it is difficult to go back.
But how does a paragliding school work?
Let's say first of all that if you are interested but you are not completely decided, many schools carry out trial days, where in the fields and followed by the instructor you will be given the opportunity to try to make small breaks in complete safety, this will allow you to understand how beautiful this thing is but especially if it is for you. Most people approach after a tandem flight (definitely for the best). Ok, once you have established that you want to take the course you have to decide where to do it. Below you will find the list of recognized schools in Italy, so you can find the one closest to you.
Which school to choose?
Assuming that an instructor does not become rich by taking courses, he does it mainly to convey a personal passion, so saying who is better is difficult, especially if you are lucky enough to know someone who already flies, get advice.
How is a course done and how long does it take?
The courses are basically divided into two distinct things, practice and theory, both of which go hand in hand until the end.
The theory touches on various topics, but the main ones are:
- Aerodynamics: that is, the study of the airfoil and the forces deployed, which ensure that our craft (as well as airplanes, helicopters and everything that flies) can detach from the ground and float in this fluid that is air. Do not be afraid, you will be taught some basic notions and therefore it will not be necessary to be a NASA engineer. But surely a very interesting and fascinating world will open up to you.
- Legislation: fthe most boring part, but certainly necessary, was the study of the laws and regulations applied to free flight. Here too there is nothing difficult, they just need to be understood and remembered a small amount of rules.
- Behavior and rules in flight: easy but essential, this part of the course serves to ensure that you become responsible pilots respecting those who are lucky enough to share the air with you. In practice, the priorities, how to set up the landing, where and how to behave with other flyers.
- Meteorology: This part of the course is essential, because the most important thing in paragliding is to evaluate the conditions before going into the air (after it is too late). During the course you will be given a smattering of this subject, also because the topic is so broad and still under study (by definition it is not an exact science). Therefore, for the course it will not be difficult to understand the basics, but to become a good pilot it would be better to become passionate about this subject, which will make you the difference between starting from home with a high probability of being able to fly or finding yourself at take off without being able to get your feet off the ground, because you have not been able to interpret a weather forecast (the same will happen to you, but certainly less likely).
Practice:
Basically the practice is divided into two parts:
1 Pitch: the pitch is where the first steps take, usually in a large sloping lawn take-off and landing tests are carried out, and it is here that the feet will take off the ground for the first time. At first it will seem like a nice mess to untangle all those lines, but in a short time you will immediately become familiar. The instructor will follow you step by step, and will make you practice until you are ready for the next step.
2 High flights: substantially much higher pitches, here you will get there when the instructor sees you safe enough in the take-off and landing phase. High flights are carried out with the help of a radio transmitter and therefore you will always be in contact with your instructor who will guide you throughout the flight. In this period you will be taught some maneuvers to be carried out in flight, to ensure that you get the right confidence with the vehicle. The landing setting will also be taught to you during this period, first the instructor will guide you, until you become autonomous.
To conclude:
The course can last on average from 3 to 6 months (mainly weekends), depending on your availability and how many days a week the school teaches, the weather conditions and the dates of the exams.
It must be said that once you have obtained the free flight license you cannot be considered autonomous, this will come with a lot of practice and hours spent improving (this part will entirely depend on you).
One piece of advice we take the liberty of giving you is to join your local club and frequent the most experienced pilots as much as possible, trying to steal all the secrets of those who have been flying for years and don't be afraid to ask, ask, ask.
How much does a course cost?
To date, the figure ranges from € 1500 to € 2000 including the use of equipment during the course and insurance.
How much does a complete paragliding equipment cost?
The equipment that includes sail, harness, reserve parachute, have various costs based on category and brand, for a beginner we start from a base of € 3000 upwards (all new) or in schools they will usually be able to recommend used coupons that they will allow you to significantly reduce your expense (which is highly recommended at the beginning). Do not try to buy second-hand items on your own, you risk finding yourself with unsuitable material.
