From registration to landing: everything you need to know about cross-country competitions

Competitive paragliding is one of the most fascinating and technical air sports in the world. Flying with a flexible wing using invisible thermals, navigating mountains and valleys, and doing so in competition with other pilots requires a unique combination of courage, technical skill, and meteorological knowledge.

A classic paragliding race, known in the Anglo-Saxon world as a cross-country competition or simply comp, is a structured event that can last from two days to two weeks, during which drivers compete daily in trials called tasks. In this article, we’ll explore in detail how a classic race works: from logistical preparation to takeoff, from in-flight navigation to landing, through the scoring system and the rules that govern the competition.

01 – Types of Paragliding Races

Before delving into the structure of a race, it is useful to distinguish the main types of competitions in the world of paragliding. The most common and prestigious form is cross-country racing, where drivers must cover a pre-established route in the shortest possible time using thermal ascents. This is the discipline practiced at the FAI (Fédération Aéronautique Internationale) World Cup and the World Championships.

Then there are aerobatics competitions (Aerobatics), where pilots perform spectacular maneuvers at low altitude over a lake or safe area, and precision landing competitions, where the goal is to touch down as close to a target as possible. However, when we talk generically about “paragliding competition”, we almost always refer to cross-country competitions.

FAI classification of races

Cat 1: World and continental championships – the highest competitive level.

Cat 2: FAI World Cup stages – annual international circuit.

National and local races: Circuits in each country, often open to foreign drivers as well.

 

02 – Organization and Preparation of the Tender

Registration and General Briefing

Each competition begins with the registration phase, during which pilots officially register, hand over the required documentation (patent, insurance, wing approval), and receive race materials: identification numbers, mandatory GPS trackers, and the specific competition rules. The GPS tracker is a fundamental element: it allows the organization to follow all pilots in real time, ensures safety and provides the data necessary for performance calculations.

The day before the start of the competition, or on the morning of the first day, the general briefing is held. At this meeting, the organization presents the specific rules of the race, introduces the technical staff (race director, meteorologist, safety committee), explains the permitted and prohibited flight zones, and answers the pilots’ questions.

 

The Role of the Meteorologist

In a high-level race, the presence of a dedicated meteorologist is essential. Each morning, the meteorologist analyzes the forecast and provides the race director and drivers with a detailed briefing on the expected conditions: development of thermals, wind speed and direction, and the presence of any disturbances. Pilots, on the other hand, must be able to interpret the weather independently during flight, as conditions can change rapidly in the mountains.

 

03 – The Daily Task

The heart of every race day is the task, or the route that the drivers must complete. The task is defined by the race director in the morning, taking into account the weather forecast and the characteristics of the territory. A good task must be challenging but achievable, it must test the pilots’ skills without exposing anyone to unnecessary risks.

Task types

Race to Goal (R2 G) is the most common format: all drivers must reach a set goal, and whoever gets there first wins. The Elapsed Time (ET) is similar to the Race to Goal but each pilot’s personal timer starts the moment they pass through the start cylinder: this eliminates the “mass” effect that can make collective take-off dangerous. The Open Distance Task is a variant where the goal is to travel the greatest possible distance in a predetermined direction.

On good days, routes can exceed 100 or even 150 kilometers through breathtaking mountain landscapes.

Waypoints and Cylinders

The route is defined by a series of waypoints (GPS points) around which virtual cylinders are defined. Pilots must enter or touch the edge of each cylinder in the correct order. The start cylinder (SSS, Start of Speed Section) marks the beginning of the timed part, while the goal cylinder (ESS, End of Speed Section) marks the end. Cylinder radii typically range from 400 meters for the goal to several kilometers for intermediate turnpoints.

 

04 – The Takeoff Zone and Launch

Take-off Management

The take-off zone of a race is a very different environment from that of a normal free flight. Dozens and sometimes hundreds of pilots are on the same launch pad, each with their wing stretched out on the ground, waiting for the takeoff window. The takeoff window (launch window) is the period of time during which pilots can take off: it typically opens 30-60 minutes before the start time and closes concurrently with the start. Those who fail to take off within the window are penalized or excluded from the test.

The Departure Gate

After takeoff, the pilots climb to altitude and position themselves in the vicinity of the start cylinder. Here begins one of the most tactically complex phases of the race: waiting for the start. Pilots fly in groups above the start point, gaining altitude to be in the best position. When the gate opens, everyone tries to cross the cylinder as best they can: at the highest altitude, at maximum speed, in the direction of the first waypoint. The seconds immediately after starting are frenetic and require great piloting skill.

05 – The Race Flight: Thermal, Tactics and Navigation

The Thermal Flight

Cross-country paragliding relies entirely on the exploitation of thermals, columns of hot air rising from the sun-heated Earth’s surface. A well-centered thermal can cause the pilot to climb at rates of 3-5 m/s or even higher; a weak or poorly centered thermal wastes precious time.

During flight, the pilot continuously oscillates between two phases: the thermal spiral (when it rises into a thermal) and the gliding flight (when it moves towards the next waypoint). Optimizing this thermal-planate cycle is at the heart of race tactics. An experienced driver knows when it’s time to leave a thermal – even if it’s still rising – to continue towards the goal with sufficient altitude.

The Flight Tactics

Flying in a group can be beneficial: flight mates signal thermals with their presence. However, blindly following a group can lead to suboptimal choices. The best pilots know when to break away from the pack to take a more direct flight line or to take advantage of a thermal that others have ignored. Quota management is another crucial tactical element: getting to waypoints with too much altitude is a waste of time; getting there with too little altitude is risky.

GPS Variometer: Indicates the rate of ascent or descent and the position relative to the waypoints (Flymaster, Naviter Oudie, Syride).

Navigation Apps: XCTrack or FlyMaster provide real-time distance, estimated time and wind.

Mandatory GPS tracker: Transmits the location to the organization for flight safety and validation.

Flight safety

During the race flight, safety takes priority over the outcome. Modern competitions have defined safe flight zones and minimum altitudes to be respected above certain terrain. In the event of deteriorating weather conditions, the race director may radio the cancellation of the task or the invitation to land immediately. Pilots must bring their cell phone, area map, water, and signaling materials.

06 – The Goal and the Landing

Achieving the goal is the main goal of every driver. The goal is usually a large flat pitch in the vicinity of an inhabited area. The approach is a delicate phase: often many pilots arrive almost simultaneously, and air traffic management in the goal area requires great attention. There is usually a pre-established approach circuit that pilots must respect.

Once landed, pilots must validate their flight by approaching the goal line and having staff read the GPS tracker, or by automatically uploading data via the tracking system. The official time is recorded when the pilot passes through the final cylinder (ESS), not at the time of the physical landing.

For pilots who fail to reach the goal, landing occurs at any point along the route where they have run out of available thermals. These pilots are classified based on the distance traveled along the task route. The recovery is organized by the organization through so-called retrieves: vehicles that move to collect the pilots scattered across the territory.

 

07 – Scoring system

Scoring in high-level races is calculated using the official formula of the CIVL (Commission Internationale de Vol Libre), the FAI commission responsible for free flight. The maximum score for a task is 1000 points, divided into three main components:

This split ensures that even those who don’t reach the goal get a significant score if they have covered a good portion of the course. A task is only valid if a certain minimum number of pilots reach the goal. If very few pilots have arrived, the task can be declared null or worth a reduced score. Scores are published on platforms like Liverack24 or AirScore, accessible to everyone in real time.

08 – General Ranking and Award

The overall ranking of a multi-day race is constructed by adding the scores obtained in each valid task. Typically, a discard system is applied: in longer races, the driver can eliminate the score of his worst task. This system reduces the weight of individual errors and rewards consistency throughout the entire competition.

At the end of the last day of competition, the awards ceremony is held. The first overall finishers and often also the best in each category are awarded: women, veterans, local drivers, drivers with lower homologations. The atmosphere of the awards ceremony is usually very festive and convivial: despite the competition, the paragliding community is known for its spirit of camaraderie and sharing.

09 – The Race Driver’s Equipment

A driver who participates in high-level races uses specific and highly optimized equipment. The racing wing (referred to as the CCC according to the CIVL classification, the top category) is much better performing than a standard wing, with glide coefficients above 11:1 and top speeds above 70 km/h. These wings require highly experienced pilots to operate them in turbulent conditions.

The racing harness is designed to minimize aerodynamic drag: the driver assumes a semi-lying position, with his legs extended forward inside an aerodynamic container. The back protection is integrated into the harness and can be airbag or high density foam. The emergency parachute (reserve) is a mandatory safety element in racing, and pilots must be able to correctly perform the launch procedure.

10 – The World Championships and the International Circuit

The pinnacle of competitive paragliding is represented by the FAI World Championships, which take place every two years in different locations. The most iconic stops in history were held in Austria, France, Brazil, Colombia and many other countries. The World Championships attract hundreds of drivers from dozens of nations and represent the most prestigious event in the discipline.

The FAI World Cup is an annual circuit made up of several stages around the world: from Europe to Latin America, from Asia to Africa. Each stage awards points for the World Cup standings, and at the end of the season the men’s and women’s champions are crowned. The stages take place in locations chosen for the quality of the flight conditions: areas with well-developed thermals, spectacular landscapes and favorable logistics.

Flying a flexible wing through hundreds of kilometers of landscape, braving the wind and seeking thermals – is an experience few other sports can offer.
